Humax Box? You might like this.

Recommended Posts

Something new from FreeSat. Sitting in the restaurant and the wife/husband asks if you remembered to record her/his favourite TV program while you’re out and you think "Oh shite" well no more. This handy little app lets you record on your Humax using your Android phone. It 'pairs' with your Humax box and tells it to record via your mobile phone or tablet from anywhere in the world. It can also be used as a remote control from any room in the house via your WiFi.

Been able to do that just with a web browser with my TiVos for 10 years or more.

When I was working offshore I could access them (I have 3) and post messages on the TV to my OH. To wind her up sometime I would change the channel [6]

Also given sufficient bandwidth I could have streamed or downloaded programmes from them.

The app seems to have rather mixed reviews.

Well good for you. All I know is I down loaded the app onto my phone and tablet, it works and I have not had a serious problem. The only 'issue' is if you have more than one WiFi network at home as both the Humax box and the phone/tablet need to be on the same WiFi network. Tried it out and about and it works fine.

There is also an IOS version. The app only works with the newer Freetime Humax box. There have been concerns if you left your box in standby the app makes the disk to start up and shut off every 15 mins, which could cause premature disk wear; see http://goo.gl/BJeY8B  There is software for the older Humax Foxsat recorders: Raydon’s Media and File Server Bundle for the Humax FoxsatHDR which works very well without the disk problems http://myhumax.org/blog/?page_id=166

Thanks for the heads up on the disk thing. I do not think it will reduce the mtbf of the disk and they are easy to replace anyway. Having said that I have watched, or more to the pont listened to, my Humax and I don't hear the HDD start up and stop. I am not saying it doesn't, it is probably my hearing.

It is a very argumentative point. Windows ver 7 and above spin up and down the HDD automatically as do many laptops to save energy, bit like some cars now stop the engine automatically when the car is not in motion. In the list of things that cause HDD's to fail the most highest on the list is heat. If you want to know more then the following paper may help you.

The Humax takes a standard SATA HDD and takes about 10 minutes to replace. Once the drive is installed the Humax goes into maintenance mode automatically and asks you to format the HDD. Once completed power off and on and it will be as nothing has changed. You can also upgrade from 500mb to 1tb or 2tb without problem even on some of the older machines.

To cut a long story short guys, don't worry it won't damage your Humax box. If it did and it was proven there would be a line of Humax users trying to get new HDD's fitted.
