Russethouse
Posted by ;will_the_conqueror (1511 posts) 18-Mar-04, 05:32 PM (BST) Here's my two sous worth. Most of this has been mentioned here before but it might be useful to have the info in one place. If you want to avoid being ripped off by Brittany Ferries here's a bit of insider information:1. Overnight crossings are always very expensive, even without cabin charges.2. On the Portsmouth/Caen route, the morning crossing from France and the afternoon crossing from England are almost always cheapest. The same will apply to other routes with three crossings per day.3. On most routes Tuesday is the cheapest day to travel. Exceptions are Portsmouth/St Malo (post 21 March when Friday is the cheapest), Poole/Cherbourg, where Wednesdays are the cheapest day, and while cheapest day Plymouth/Roscoff is Tuesday, Wednesday is chepaest in the Roscoff/Plymouth direction travelling between March-November.You can usually save money by booking P&O Dover-Calais crossings through http://www.ferry.co.uk. I know of no way of avoiding P&O western channel ripoffs though. If you don't mind travelling to the smaller ports, then it's always worth looking at Norfolk Line (Dover/Dunquerque) and Transmanche (Newhaven/Dieppe - http://www.transmancheferries.com).For stays more than 10 days, or one-way fares, http://www.ferrysale.co.uk is very good (it is a Hoverspeed-owned discount operation so it only has Hoverspeed services unfortunately). It's also worth looking at for shorter stays. Will (50)
