English Bull Terrier

Recommended Posts

Whilst I was at the Spa in Carcassonne last week with Rowan, I couldn't bring myself to go and look at all the dogs - too many - too harrowing........ and not enough space in the back of my car to take them home!  However, whilst Sue was investigating a very sad couple, I walked along the cages nearby and noticed rather a lovely English Bull Terrier (more black than white but otherwise the classic Skyes dog from Oliver!).  Now I have a very soft spot for this breed as they are normally wonderful with people and make courageous and loyal pets.  This poor lady had opened up her nose by pushing hard on the wire cage that she was clearly not happy about being trapped in!  She was kind to the touch and Rowan said they were trying to find a rescue place that specialised in the breed - I hope they were trying hard as she was very very stressed and barking a lot.  Now some dear friends of mine had one some years ago and when they returned to live in the UK from S Africa she had to go into quarantine........ she died within two months due to barking constantly from the stress of being in kennels despite being with her long time friend - a Great Dane, who made it through the six months.  I felt very sad for this dog at Carcassonne as you could see she was suffering very much in the same way, so just thought I would post this in the outside chance that someone on here might want her - she needs to get out soon, ASAP!

I saw her when I visited the SPA and burst into tears! Her nose was bleeding quite badly and she looked totally stressed out.

There must be someone out who is experienced with the breed who could take her.

All (but probably especially Christine)

Yesterday Florence was told by the President that she is not prepared for our dogs to go to associations. This is reversing something she had said earlier and clearly means the death for lots of our dogs.

I am going to try and get someone (maybe you, Christine?) to talk to her and try to convince her that associations are not a bad thing, and okay, we may not know the final adopter of each dog, but we hav to trust the association to find decent homes. The SPA itself doesn't do any checks on people, so I don;t see any difference.

The Bull terrier is a he, he is called Eduard and is very very gentle. I will post the links to some photos in a sec, if someone would please sort them out for me.

Thanks Merlin!

Sorry, I got his name wrong. He is Malcolm. Got him confused with Loius' poodle (how COULD I!?)

Okay, Malcolm was abandoned on 17th March. He is 6 years old, and is vaccinated and chipped. When he arrived he was very thin and had several small injuries, sores on his feet etc. and he has since injured his nose on the bars of the cage as he is very unhappy in a pen that is WAY too small for him.

He calms down quickly on walks and knows the commands for sit, lie etc, and he was walked on the leash by the 4 year old son of one of the volunteers, from whom he took treats from his hands without any problems.

His ID number for the SPA is EE174.

He really is a wonderful looking dog and I hope someone can offer him a home.

Merlin

Are the pictures on the forum okay, if I resend them to you privately?

Ref his behaviour with other dogs and cats, unknown to both. We asked to put him with another dog and the SPA people helpfully said that it was best for potential adopters to bring their dog and see how they got on. I pointed out that if people were coming a long way we could save them a journey by finding out in advance if it is a no-no with all other dogs. I was ignored (well, you have been there, so you know how it is). Tomorrow I will see if one of the other (nicer) guys will be more responsive.

Ref cats, he was interested in the cattery, but not in an aggressive way. Mind you, look at Molly! You can't tell, to be honest. Virginie, one of the other volunteers, who knows the breed, said she think he just wants to make friends with everyone and everything!

I will get back to you tomorrow. As you have seen, he is very gentle with children.

Hi Rowan - I have sent the bottom picture of him to these people together with your comments about him so far - cut and pasted so no embelishments!   I have said I will get back as soon as I know more from you.  Fingers crossed........

Well this lady seems really interested in the Bull Terrier and I have my fingers and toes all crossed for him!  She lost (died) her rescued Staffie two months ago, whom she called her soul mate and now has an old 14 year old who's lonely too. She helps run an activity centre which is why she has to be sure he's good with people and other dogs.  She's seen the pictures I sent and thinks he's gorgeous so she's going to try to get to see him this week at Carcassonne!

Well very sadly this lady seems to be backing away a little.........   She says that she would love him but that they would need to do some fencing first and they have a busy summer schedule just around the corner as they run an activity centre.  So I'm not sure now and am feeling a bit down and worried for Malcolm's wellbeing once more.  I am not pressuring her in any way and will just have to see what she decides as I've left her to think about it.  If anyone has any ideas please, voice them.

I don't know - but I wish.  She hasn't said no for sure yet but I'm not too optimistic by the noises she's making.  I've sent some more pictures that Rowan took yesterday when she had him out with one of the Beagles - both un-castrated, they were fine together and Malcolm just loves everyone!  I'm following in Rowan's footsteps and not sleeping at night for thinking of all the dogs I saw there that day and especially one little one that a French lady took the day we were there last week and has since taken her back as she said she was too lively!!  One of Rowan's favorites so you can imagine how she's feeling poor lass.  Poor little girl a week of freedom and being looked after and then taken back!  It's deeply heart breaking and I know we should toughen up a bit and be more realistic perhaps instead of fretting so........ but it's impossible.  So, if there is anyone who might think of Malcolm the gentle and very loving English Bull Terrier, please make contact soon as he's so very stressed where he is.  Thank you one and all.

It's so very good what you are trying to do Merlin.  But if someone shows any signs of backing out, then let it be so, don't feel you have failed in any way.  It means it wasn't right.  The right home for Malcolm will come along.  Just look at Albi for example!  The link I put earlier "Alerte à Malibu" is also a forum, he could be on there for English Bull Terrier lovers.  If Flo put him on Rescue, they and any other lovers of the breed would see him.  With his identity number Rowan could also put him on AngloInfo Langeudoc Roussillon.

For the little girl who was taken back, it's the same, very sad, but it means they weren't the right family for her.  I know sometimes I come over as a little harsh, but yes, you do have to toughen up in a way (though underneath you don't really) to just try to be as you say more realistic, or factual.  I know when I go into these places, I have to try to go into blank mode.  There's a way out for them, we have to find it.

Dear Christine - thank you for those words and of course you are quite right in every sense.  Having been to Carcassonne and it having left such an impression I can see why Rowan gets so very upset - we would be a hopeless pair together!  The rule that Carcassonne have that they won't let other refuges take the 'strain' sometimes is a difficult one to fathom when it would help them and the dogs.  I know we can't help them all and it's all the more upsetting when you know there is a deadline to try and meet to save them from the final trip to the vet - or in this case, the Bull Terrier being so very very stressed to the point that he may well end up ill and then be put down also.  You are not harsh, just more controlled because deep down you feel the same or you wouldn't do all you do for so many of the dogs you help - we need a vertiable crusade my dears - a crusade in the name of animals in danger and despair.  Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Thanks Christine - good to know as he is very much on my mind poor fellow - I have sent these pics to the lady who is still interested and who is now hoping to go and see him on 1st June.  I called the Spa at Carcassonne yesterday and told them this just in case they decided to stick him on the hit list!  I am not getting my hopes up too high for this lady to have him but then again, yes I am hoping like crazy for him.  Rowan mentioned that the Spa had turned away a young girl who was after him because they were suspicious of her motives - looking for a 'hard' dog they thought............ just what the poor chap doesn't need!  I'm glad that they are being responsible at least and they told Rowan that they would prefer an English lady to take him....
