I1
Why Dogs Should Be President They work well together. They work for the good of the pack. They protect their young and their elders. They do not kill indiscriminately. They do not lie, cheat or steal. They won't spend money redecorating the White House. They do not read Newspapers, watch TV or give interviews.Their clothes don't have zippers or pockets. They don't indulge in fantasies. They can be NEUTERED!! David584
Sorry to have to disagree with some of those points. Not all work well together. Some do steal - my friend's dog is forever trying to half hinch the food in the kitchen.I have known of some dogs that actually watch TVAnd how do we know that they do not indulge in fantasies??? Minouette
Sorry, I disagree as well. I think we should all be voting for a cat !! Excluding mine that is, until he catches that dratted mouse-pet of his!Minou

Mpprh
HiThe post above is indeed French related. Those of a certain age will remember the tabloid headlines "Bunnyrabbits can, and will, go to France".And, we should remember, that this trial was as notorious (at least in terms of column inches)in the 70's as OJ's skirmish in the 90's.So, as a sort of Xmas quiz :Who was the bunnyrabbit ?What was the name of his dog ?Who was the surprisingly incompetent airline pilot ?Who was "AW" ?Peter
Tom
Good quiz. Can only get one out of 4. It's all to do with the Jeremy Thorpe scandal. He was leader of the libs, and was accused of conspiring to have his homosexual lover murdered. There was something about the lover's dog being killed as well. AW is Auberon Waugh who helped expose the scandal in Private Eye. He stood as a kind of satirical candidate for the DLP against Jeremy Thorpe in 1979 election. Don't know the name of the dog or where the bunnyrabbits or the pilot or France come in to it.Blunkett should count his blessings.
Dick Smith
I remember the Private Eye headline : "Vote Liberal or we kill your dog" and their nickname for the other party - 'Scott of the Arseantics'.

Mpprh
HiWell done Neil !I think the dog may have been Rinka ?AW wrote a very good book about the whole affair.Cigar ? Now you are getting confused. That was Clinton, wasn't it ?Peter
Tom
Neil, apologies for being nosey, but why do you have AW as your Avatar? Are you by any chance connected to the DLP?

I1
This may seem incredibly naïve but is there really such a thing as the DLP and if so what, where and when ?
Neil
This may seem incredibly naïve but is there really such a thing as the DLP and if so what, where and when ?
Well, sort of. It did exist after a fashion, but fielded a candidate only in one constituency in the 1979 general election. This is from Wikipedia:"Waugh was a candidate at the 1979 election, indulging another of his pet hates - former Liberal Leader Jeremy Thorpe, who was about to stand trial for conspiracy to murder arising out of a scandal that Waugh had helped expose. It was alleged that Thorpe had links to an incident in which a man called Norman Scott, who claimed to have had an affair with Thorpe, had seen his dog shot dead. Waugh stood against Thorpe for the Dog Lovers' Party and Thorpe obtained an injunction against Waugh's election literature."
Tom
What about voting for horses? This is by a poet called Rudolf Marku about Caligula and his horse which he allegedly made a senator. And it came to pass that Caligula's horse/ Was proclaimed senator./ A fair horse, almost divine,/ It strode majestically into the hall,/ Greeted everyone with due regard,/ Taking no notice of rank, or office, or even of ministers,/ And went straight to its appointed place/ Modestly,/ As if it were ashamed of being there./ It immediately saw through those around it,/ Murderers, profiteers, sycophants, wheelers and dealers,/ It never assented/ to the conquest of other countries,/ To the lowering of salaries, or to the raising of prices,/ Nor did it take any notice of pompous speeches,/ Never did it applaud,/ but listened to the speeches of the orators/ with sheer indifference/ And it never dreamed of taking advantage of its senatorial position to publish fat books ... Dick Smith
Now be fair, no-one ever suggested voting for Caligula's horse. It must have been a member of the Horse of Lords.
