Deimos
E-bay are planning to start the sale of live animals nextyear (http://forums.ebay.com/db1/thread.jspa?threadID=1000164235&start=0). My impression is that this is not a hoax(although difficult to believe).A petition has been started to try to stop this http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/148847541?ltl=1134858895. If you agree with the petition (i.e. to tryto dissuade e-bay from starting the sale of live animals) then you might liketo sign it.Ian

Will
I will certainly add my support. I can see all sorts of problems, not least the French rules on sale of animals.Edit - having signed, I would advise others considering doing the same to use a disposable (e.g. hotmail etc) e-mail address on the petition site. Ron Avery
Before you start a petition against something, would it not be better to know what you are protesting against? If you actually bothered to read the post on Ebay they are not planning to start selling pets, it actually says ""We are hoping to launch a Live Pets Classified Format early next year. The listings would not be transactional and there would only be a listing fee. We are also looking into allowing non-profit animal shelters to list animals for adoption for free"So the plan is to put pet owners in touch with potential owners and buyers, What is diiferent to this than Christine and others asking on here for homs for unwanted pets from people who she does not know or an advert in a dog/cat magazine or newsagent??? If it gets unwanted pets good homes all power to their elbow
Russethouse
Hmmm - I did read that Ron, BUT what is going to stop puppy farms etc advertising in the classified section ?I think as a way to for animal shelters etc to get publicity its probably a good thing, but its an idea that needs a lot of work before its launched IMHO. Deimos
[quoteuser="Ron Avery"]Before you start a petition against something, would it not be betterto know what you are protesting against? If you actually bothered to readthe post on Ebay they are not planning to start selling pets,it actually says "[/quote] I did read it Ron and I strongly object to the idea (don’tquite know why you assume the people have not read it ?). In many countries sale of e.g. dogs is nowmore limited to reputable breeders who tend to check the suitability of wheretheir animals are going. However, thereare puppy farms still in existence (even in Europe) and they do still seek waysto sell their dogs.I posted the link to the proposal as well as the petitionsite to register disagreement (if people disagreed). Ron, why do you assume that people have not read what they aredisagreeing with ? I think most peoplewill not just “blindly sign” any old petition (or maybe I just have more faithin people than you do). Certainly inthe UK the Ebay proposal is causing quite a stir in the animal welfarecommunity and it is pretty amazing that Ebay are even considering such a move. True that there is discussion about the site being used byanimal welfare organisations. Animalshelters are very strict about who they allow to home animals in their care(e.g. the vet who went to the RSPCA for a dog recently yet, despite intendingto take the dog to work with him was refused because “he worked all day”). In practice animal rescuer centres (UK anyway)would be unlikely to advertise on Ebay.As Russethouse says, it would provide an ideal “outlet” forpuppy farms, “inexperience breeders” and the like to sell their animals toinappropriate homes – probably part of reasons for the “discontent” about theproposal in the UK (I don’t know about other countries). In fact given the increasingly limitedoutlets for farmed puppies I think such people would leap at the new way tosell their animals. In my own opinion, the details about how the financialtransaction occurs are not particularly relevant to what Ebay are undertaking (e.g.do Ebay take their “cut” as a percentage of the transaction of by charging for advertising– the difference is only in how Ebay make their money and how the money changeshands (i.e. directly or via PayPal)).I posted the issue to make others aware and if theydisagreed with Ebay’s plans to show where they could participate in thepetition against it should they wish to.Ian
