Chesnelay
Has anyone had any problems with regard to their dogs suffering in the heat when they are incaserated below decks on the ferries recently? We normally take our dogs on speedferries, but was very glad we didnt last weekend as the temperature in the car was 27C. We kept the windows open but the air was very still and suffocating. I know the crew went round the cars tapping on the windows of those with dogs just to make sure the dogs were conscious.! Although it is advertised as a 50 mins crossing - it is more like 2 hrs but the time the cars are loaded and unloaded.
westland
We had a bad experience whilst crossing with a Luton hire van bringing over our belongings. It was an extremely hot afternoon and we found ourselves being borded alongside lorries. I started to get worried when we found oursleves on a part of the deck that was open and the sun was blasting down. I immediately started to panic when I realised that there was no way out. I tried to explain to the first member of staff that I could see and pointed out the fact that we had the dog sticker on the windscreen. We were told to open the windows, or put the dog in the back, but I knew that 15mins in that heat would have killed him. This was one occasion where I got assertive ie became hysterical asking them to imagine the adverse publicity etc. The best we could get was to sit in the stairwell with the dog for the whole crossing, I should have pushed further as I was later informed by another member of staff that we might have been given a cabin under the circumstances as it was a long crossing and there are cabins that take guide dogs. There is always some flexibilty with any rules if necessary. It is always a worry until you are safely across the channel.
Rob Roy
When we came over 5 years ago our dogs were very unhappy by the end of the ferry crossing as it was similar weather to what we have had recently. We were allowed to check on them, escorted by a member of the crew, but by the time we disembarked they were very hot and fed up. When we used to go to Ireland we could have the dog out of the car as long as we stayed on deck, which was fair enough. Why the cross channel ferries do not allow the same thing I don't know.
