That was very interesting and informative and I shall print it off , thank you. Do you know any books,or similar that give addresses of hotels ,gites etc that allow dogs in France. I know the Campanile chain does, but sometimes I would like to try different hotels,but other than turning up at the door and asking the question have not managed to find a comprehensive list.

Thank you for the link, on translating the bit about pet-sitting I now have a new title "Guard in residence" and I liked the bit about sprinkling the plants, I must remember that when a client asks me to water their garden [:D]

Les Logis de France have a guide which shows the hotels which accept pets with a sign showing a dog's head.  I just did the search on their site by critères, then "animaux acceptés dans les chambres" and the result was 2,564 hotels.  The guide is free in the hotels Logis de France and tourist offices, or they will send it to you against € 3.20 for postage.
