TWINKLE
Perhaps one of them shaves!Seriously - I found this http://www.moggies.co.uk/html/whiskers.html and this http://www.moggies.co.uk/html/whiskers.html .I know a little girl who once cut her cats whiskers off. It wasn't me and it wasn't my daughter either. Maybe one of the kids got a bit handy with the scissors[Www]
Unknown
Thanks Twinkle, but I know the kids haven't cut them. Does anyone else have this problem with their cat?
Dick Smith
We used to have a cat with short, twisted whiskers. She kept trying to investigate what was cooking on the stove...They're a bit like eyelashes, some cats have long ones, some don't.
Unknown
But he used to have lovely whiskers.
Dick Smith
So did I. How old is he?Ah - just seen that you told us that. They do get damaged and re-grow. Is he the adventurous type?
Unknown
Yes, very. Only half an hour ago he was chasing a vole around the veranda. Then I realised it was dead.
Dick Smith
So that wasn't very vigorous chasing, then, was it? Or was he doing the chucking it up in the air and looking surprised when it came down job?
Unknown
Well I think he had killed it first and then did the chucking it up in the air thing.
Dick Smith
One of their sweeter habits. We had a cat that was an expert pigeon jointer - she would leave various body parts hidden under different pieces of furniture.Once when I was boning a chicken (which aroused her interest pretty keenly) she nipped out for a moment (literally) and then leapt up onto the counter and added a dead starling to the ingredients. I've never seen a cat looking so proud.

Pads
Does the other cat groom the short whiskered cat? Our cat knibbles the whiskers off our other cat as she washes him[8-)] Dont know why? But she is very fussy about keeping him clean
ali-cat
I was told the length of a cat's whiskers were in proportion to it's body size - so it could judge if it could fit through a gap or not. If that is true & if I had whiskers they would need to be very, very long!! [:-))]
Unknown
Thanks for your replies. Both cats groom wach other, but I haven't seen them nibbling the whiskers.
Val_2
Why don't cats shave? Because nine out of ten owners said their cats preferred whiskers (whiskas)
Coco
BOOM BOOM! [:D]One of our cats used to keep nibbling the younger one's whiskers. We were told by the breeder that mother cats often do this to stop the younger cats from wondering too far because, as Ali said, they use their whiskers to judge the size of spaces to get through, so no whiskers makes them less likely to be adventurous in the wanderings. Don't know how true that is of course!
Unknown
Coco and Ali, that kind of makes sense. Peppie the one with no whiskers is, lets say a few sandwiches short of a picnic, Cookie the other cat seems to look out for Peppie. They are brothers, and Cookie has always looked after Peppie, he can't meow and we think he has short term memory loss.Oddly enough I think Peppies whiskers have deminished since Ginger the stray has been around. I wonder if Cookie is trimming back Peppies whiskers to stop him wandering off. We have Ginger popping round every now and then, I still can't get rid of him. Dick Smith
Ah! the scales fall from my eyes! This is quite common behaviour with queens who are grooming their kittens. They nibble them off, for no known reason.
Coco
We have Ginger popping round every now and then, I still can't get rid of him.
We have one of those at the moment. Keeps coming throught the catflap and pinching our poor old boy's food and terrifying the life out of him - to the extent that we'vehad to re-introduce a litter tray after 17 years because he's too frightened to go outside at night. Husband took to being very French the other night and peeing all round the door that holds the catflap. Seems to have worked - the ferrel's probably wondering which B***y great cat left that scent!![:-))]
