SaligoBay
Is it true that there's a device to do this? Something about it emitting a sound that they don't like?Does it work, and where can I get one?And does it harm them?Merci.
Suze01
I saw two devices in the vets just this afternoon. I didn't look too closely so I can't tell you how they work.
Lori
Yes SB there are several on the market. I mentioned one in an old thread, now I can't remember the name of it (I think it is called Aboi-Stop - don't you love how they combined that French/English thing). A search might work. It is available at our local vet, but it costs 120 euros, so I didn't get it. But, someone on the other thread had bought it and vouched for it working. There is another one that can be read about here:www.dazer.com/dog-deterrent.jsp not sure if this one is strictly for constant dog barking or temporary zapping. Lori
Oh and the Aboi-Stop does not hurt the dog. It sprays a citronella like substance on the dog each time it barks. Apparently dogs don't like this, so each time it happens, they equate the barking with the unpleasant spray. Supposed to work.

The Riff-Raff Element
I don't know about barking, but I wish one could buy something to stopthe wretched animals from rolling in every disgusting thing that theycome across. Our witless canine reeked of God knows what by the time wegot back this morning - yet another fun-filled bathtime. Can one Fabrezedogs? It doesn't say not on the bottle, but then microwaves don't havea label on saying "do not use these to dry your dog" do they?
Pierre ZFP
but then microwaves don't have a label on saying "do not use these to dry your dog" do they?
They do now after one old dear successfully sued and got millions after warming her pooch up in the microwave (coz it didn't say that you shouldn't) and guess what? it suffered a horrible and painful death. Anna
Yeah, know exactly what you mean about rolling in "God knows what"! We had an abandoned Jack Russell cross (now sadly departed), who used to do that regularly. Even after a good bath, the smell still lingered! Cow dung, hen pen, you name it, he loved it for a good old roll!! Never tried Fabreeze, it would be interesting (if it was ok, which I very much doubt) to find out if it worked. My sister-in-law always says "never cover a smell with a smell" as it doesn't work! Have to say, I think she's right!

Val_2
Our dog is a breed which dosn't bark but he screams instead and its like a flock of seagulls,it even sets off a whistling device on a keyring locked away under the table cloths in the dresser drawer. yvonne
Aboistop works with some dogs but I've known dogs simply close their eyes against the citronelle spray and bark continuously until the device is empty !. A good method is to get a small tin with some pebbles in or any other small object that makes a sharp sound and each time the dog barks drop it near the dog - preferably so that he does'nt know where the noise has come from ( don't throw it at him no moatter how tempted you may be !!!) - say 'quiet' or another verbal signal and as soon as the barking stops then give a reward ( bits of cheese or cooked liver are good.). If you can use a clicker to reinforce the reward then this will make the lesson even clearere - be consistent - you will need to do this every time he stops when you give the 'quiet' command. Febreeze can be used on dogs and so can carpet freshner ( the foam type) -use it sparingly on the body area only - make sure it's not sprayed into their eyes or ears interestingly tomato sauce will get rid of the most disgusting smells although you will need to wash the dog afterwards it will stop any nasty niffs from lingering - you can also use a diluted solution of bicarb of soda to swap down any surfaces that been in contact with a smelly dog - it will neutralise the smell !. Bernice
Our dog was given to us by a friend and used to bark a lot we cured him by having a spray with some water in it and every time he barked we sprayed him with it.Now i only have to say"where is that spray"and he shuts upThat's how we stopped our young dog from barking , especially in the car where it was getting unbearable. We used a water pistol. No words, just a quick squirt and then ignore him. It worked straight away and he is much calmer in the car. At home if he starts to bark I just show him the water pistol - I don't need to use it. Bernice
Eos
Talking with a friend of his about a similar problem with a dog, my father recommended putting a bit of lead behind the left ear, assuring his friend that the barking would stop immediately. It was only as he got towards the end of the sentence asking how it should be inserted that his friend copped on...And to reassure all, no dog was ever hurt by my father or his friend, both confirmed animal lovers, but they do still giggle a bit over this one!
