fireworks

it's 22.30 on Saturday 8th November - Gadsby our adopted dog (history unknown) has been sahking, hyperventilating, trying to hide under everything for days - it's just dreadful. I know we could ask vet for sedation, but where we currently live, fireworks go on for days, weeks - (Eid, diwali, and for days before and after 5.11-

Any advice?

We have the same trouble here with one of our two dogs, who has been getting better over the last two years! Three years ago it was really awful with fireworks going off every night for weeks on end up to two weeks before bonfire night and anything up to a month or more after, but the law did change and we certainly noticed a much shorter time when it affected our dog.

This year has been the best so far! what we do is make sure our dogs are in he same room as us and have the TV a little louder and if we hear any fireworks or loud bangs we do not react at all, no getting annoyed or showing signs of agitation and it has rubbed off on our 11 year old who has been affected all her life, it goes on for about 4 hours but she has been very good this year.

Fireworks GRRRRRR I just don't see the need for them to sold to the general public , just have organised events. We live in the countryside where you think more people would have an understanding about animals and their dislike of loud bangs but , 4 nights of fireworks in a row, Jake the Jack Russell reallllllllllly hates them but Toby the Airedale was not so bad this year just went and sat on the stairs. We use the turn the telly up shut the curtains and put them in a room where its slightly more quite and they can't see the flashes, saying all that this has been the best year in the last 5.

I agree entirely that organised displays should be the only place to see fireworks, and that they should not be on sale to the general public.

I presume you are all talking about fireworks in the UK at the moment, as the only time I have ever heard them in France is for the 14 July[8-)]

yes Maricopa, we are still in UK - hopefuly moving over to my native Jura in Jan (wish us luck!) -

Sunday night 9th of Nov - I was hoping it would be all over now - but they are still going crazy out there - hopefully the last night for a while?!

We were near Grasse in July and saw the amazing fireworks from a long distance - in Cannes and Antibes - it was actually quite enjoyable from far on the hill, as Gadsby was in  Switzerland with friends. Hopefully we will never spend another autumn in suburbian UK and Gadsby will be at peace at last.

In Switzerland fireworks are on 1st of August- so we will make sure to be away travelling in nearby France for a few days after and before.

This is a reply from Pet Subjects in the Telegraph to a reader with the same problem......

"This is common at this time of year and a website ( www.petfireworkfear.co.uk ) offers help for pets. The ideal answer is to start to desensitse dogs to firework noise by using recordings played back at low volume, but this needs to begin several months before Guy Fawkes day. At this stage a cosy sound proofed den is the best idea, lined with clothes carrying your smell and blankets in which the dog can bury itself. A DAP diffuser plugged in nearby will release pheromones that it will find calming. It should also wear a DAP impregnated collar. Ask your vet for tranquillisers too, as if it is a severe case, you should do everything possible to prevent distress."

I have a 'lovely' neighbour in UK who buys public display grade fireworks and then lets them off in a suburban garden[:@]!!
