I've been listening to my wife chuckling, whilst doing her French homework, at some of the translations offered by her English/French dictionary.

Can someone please recommend a really good dictionary that we can buy either in the UK or in France? (We move to 24 in three weeks!)

Yes, I have used the search engine for an answer but I could only find a few vague references to dictionaries.

Any help may spoil the fun but will hopefully provide more accurate sentences!

Thanks

Clyde

Whoops! I've just noticed how I've spelt 'French' in the subject heading - please don't tell the missus.

I bought the Hachette-Oxford compact (only weighs 1.25kgs!)over here in France; 1450 pages, more than 260,000 translations plus a section on the French constitution, European Union and even how to write a French CV! It's been a great help in the last year; I would have been lost without it.

I have Robert Collins but would recommend moving as fast as possible onto a French only dictionary (I like le petit Robert) as translation doesn't help with French at all, although it is of course a useful art in in its own right.
