letrangere
I've posted in "Culture" this morning on the subject of "original thought" and its relevance (or irrelevance) in French education and/or way of life. Would be really interested in hearing from anyone who has studied in the French system at Bac or university level. Thanks.M
Miko
Hi M,no experience myself, but daughter spending year at French university as part of her course, says it is positively discouraged. They are not to do any research, or offer their own interpretations or opinions. They have to copy lecture notes and repeat them back in an essay. There is no room for individual thought. They are in the third year of their degree, and it goes against everything they have learnt. She, and her fellow English students, are having a great time, but the actual study, they are finding very unchallenging in that respect. The standard of work expected is high, but it is very different. I was very surprised to say the least. I thought that French pupils were taught philosophy, and how to think, as part of their general curriculum. But it really is very different.Miko
