Michelle28
HiWe are going to have to furnish a 4 bed house near Bayeux in the Summer. Trying to decide whether its best to buy stuff in this country and take over or buy over there. Have looked at Ikea but would like to shop around. Anybody know of any good web sites for furniture in France. I am looking for single beds. leather sofas and dining room table etc. The house will be mainly for rental so don't want too extravagant but would like decent quality. Am tempted by the January sales over here but the removals costs seem very high.Any ideas?Michelle
YCCMB
Depends so much on personal taste, how much time you've got etc... we had to do a very similar thing a couple of years ago and ended up at Ikea after discovering that the hassle of trying to buy everything from different places was outweighed by being able to decide in England what we wanted (French and English Ikea catalogues are practically identical, page-for-page!) and go to Ikea and buy it. For interest, look at the website for FLY (sort of the French version of Ikea, but not the variety - and all pretty much at the modern end: I've no idea about quality, but generally a bit more expensive than Ikea). A definite negative to all this was that we spent several days surrounded bby cardboard, bits of furniture and allen keys, and having to put together 8 flatpacked dining chairs, 2 tables, 3 beds, etc.etc. in temperatures of 40 degrees plus was not an enjoyable experience. However, within a matter of 4 days from moving in, we did have a fully furnished house, and my personal feeling about Ikea in France (much has been said on another thread by people who dislike Ikea generally) is that it's quieter than in the UK, the staff are more clued up, they can work the computer system in store and it appears to tell them the truth, so if you want to find if something's in stock, it's not the lottery it is at Brent Park or Croydon!Jane
Catalpa
Bear in mind that furnishing a house in France with predominantly IKEA products will lead to a decor personality that could just as easily be Basingstoke as Bayeaux. That might be something you'd want to avoid... or at least dilute.
Jeremy
You may like to try the many Brocante/ depot vents in and around Bayeux and Caen. Depot Vents are especially good value and a good solid table is usually around 80 to 200 euros.( in oak)As with Ikea you will have to pay delivery as with all French stores so remember to add this to sums, typically 50 euros and up depending on size of items and distance to your home.Ikea do deliver and it is relatively cheap. Paris to Caen Bed settee and 2 other pieces 110 euros..But had to wait 2 weeks Whichever way you do it will be down to you, but if you have time, French Brocantes/Depot vents do sell French furnitur which does look good and not too trendy or modern.Happy shopping, Jeremy

BJSLIV
the sommelier?I would suggest that you keep a professional distance from the sommelier and leave him to his tasks related to wine. Unless intimately acquainted, most people will prefer a Sommier in the bedroom.
