Timing belt and engine size

OK I am a woman so don't think I am completely stupid BUT just bought a Ford Transit Occasion 36 Long wheel base, hi top transit van, 1999 with 78k on the clock. On the garte grise it says its 10 CV - how does that equate to eg our Nissan is a 2.5 tdi? We need to know to find out when the timing belt needs chaning.

Thanks alot

The CV is an administrative rating that appears to be somewhat arbitrary but is actually worked out by means of some complicated formulae - this site http://www.mopar-owners-club.com/teknik/power.html explains(?) it for the benefit of misguided people who want to import old American cars into France. Different rules apply for diesel and petrol engines, and for vans or buses. For more recent vehicles, it depends mainly on the CO2 emissions from the engine.

I might be off the ball somewhat BUT if it's the 2.5 td Ford engine you might not actualy have a timing belt/chain.

Either way this CV rating thing would have nothing to do with when you change anything on your car....it depends on the vehicle and some are more prone to others for failing belts/chains. It's down to the manufacturers servicing schedules.

Cheers

Bones.

Hi

on my small, escort based, van the timing belt is supposed to be changed at 80,000 kms. My local Ford dealer said ; don't go over 100,000 as an absolute max. This maybe depends on engine fitted but was the same advice I got for another Ford vehicle.

I did the belt for the second time at 200,007 kms! The cost was about Euro 290 including the other belts !

Your safest way to find engine size is to make a note of the engine number and ask your local Ford dealer who can also tell you if you have a timing belt and at what mileage it should be changed.

Some Ford engines have the belt changed every 30,000 miles.  It would be unwise to assume previous owners carried out servicing as scheduled. If you have a cam belt and it has been changed, normally the person carrying out the job would put a sticker on the engine indicating date and mileage it was changed.
