Speeding Fine

Has anyone got experience of filling in the forms?

I got a leter saying my French registered car was photograped on the motorway at 160kph in a 130 limit.

It could have been anyone one of three people driving as we swopped the chore on the way to UK.

Any help would be appreciated.

Without wishing to pass judgement, it is true to say that, if you are the registered owner of the car, it is you who will face the fine (or as Val enthuses, prison - albeit unlikely for 30Kph over the limit).

In the UK, of course, you can claim that someone else was driving & it is up to the CPS to prove that it was you - this does not apply in France.

Pay up, get a French licence so that the points can be deducted & learn your lesson. Remember that, by UN & AI standards, France is a Police state, along with Zimbabwe & N Korea, to mention a couple.

We only have two-lane N-class fast routes here in Brittany, there are no tolls until you reach Rennes The maximum speed limit is 110kph these roads, less for "A" drivers and in bad weather or poor light. How many ordinary cars can do 160 anyway, seems the poster is bragging a bit about having a go faster car. I've seen how relatives of victims of speeding are affected first hand and have no sympathy for anyone caught going this fast. As the poster said, it may have been his friend doing this but even so, still irresponsible.

Go-faster car??Almost any family saloon-even my diesel Escort and that's not me reading it off the speedo-the Autocar road test timed one at 111mph(179.5kph).It will cruise happily at 160kph all day(where legal)and there not much of that left, even in Germany.

Val, just a mute point but there are no toll roads in Rennes, nor in Brittany, that I can recall. Something to do with Duchess Anne I believe ?

There are also a number of Autoroutes which do not have tolls but are genuine "A"-limited access. Two that spring to mind are the road down to Rouen after you turn off the new road to Paris and the road from Clermont-Ferrand down to Languedoc-Rousillon(except for Millau bridge).

I wonder if Val2 is getting mixed up with kph and mph? 160kph is 100mph...........as stated, I can't think offhand of a car that WON't do that now.

Having said that, of course, I believe that anyone who does over ANY limit ANYWHERE, should face hanging, drawing and quartering, andf their head should be displayed on a pole on a motorway bridge.

After all, we all know that speed kills, and it's a REALLY bad crime.

So, Alcazar, the two unbelievably fat women in the sans-permi who pulled out in front of me and proceeded to go uphill at 15mph (after all, they were busy lighting cigarettes) were SO MUCH SAFER than me doing 110kph (the applicable speed limit) in my Volvo 850 T5?

The Volvo has good brakes, by the way.

If I could do smilies I'd be winking just now.

I wonder if there are any accident figures for 'sans permit' vehicles? But surely they are not allowed on Motorways?  Brings to mind the 'bubble car' song - remember that? On 'our' stretch of motorway, the A20 around Chateauroux, the limit is 130 kph and no toll anywhere along it's length.

It really does annoy me when people trot out the cliche " speed kills", it may well have done in the 60's and 70's but that was a different kind of speed.

Speed does not kill, bad driving does, inappropriate speed for the conditions or location does. Driving at 30mph or 50kph outside a school, at start or end of school day, no matter what the local speed limit, is far more dangerous than driving at 140kph on a quiet autoroute. One is breaking the law but is unlikely to hurt anyone, the other is far more likely to hurt a child who excitedly runs into the road. Who is the safer driver?

We should concentrate on training better drivers, drivers who are trained to recognise hazards and drive appropriately. Too much emphasis in driver training is placed on just how to pass the necessary test.

Rant over, thanks for your time.

Oh yeah!  My hubby just got one of those in the mail too!  128 in a 90 (work zone he didn't know was 90....there were about 6 cones on the road and this equaled a work zone????)  We call that a speed trap in the States.  Eh well....we were in the states when it arrived so it was about a month late....I only bought the 90 euros stamp from the tabac.  Guess they'll be coming after us if they want more.

....this is his 2nd ticket in 10 months. 5 points off his liscense.  The first was for no seat belt.  He was getting in and out of our moving van and forgot to fasten it one time.

Vive la France.

Speed kills! What speed exactly?...what tosh! Does anyone actually still fall for that sort of rubbish?

It's inappropriate bad driving plus numerous other factors that kills. Speed is just one factor of many. As for travelling at 160kmh...not a problem in the right place. ie, not outside a school in a built up area.

Oh yes.........at least in the UK,  the French don't seem to be as gullible, witness the number of vandalised scameras in France

Here in the UK, people are STILL quoting the scurrilous figures from DfT ( doesn't that get pronounced "daft"), that 40% of all accidents are CAUSED by speeding.

I do not always obey the speed limit so I am not standing in judgement over others, BUT

Bad driving causes accidents, but accidents at low speeds do not usually kill. Accidents at higher speeds often do kill. So... speed is an issue a major issue. Let's not try to pretend otherwise.

Arbitary speed limits are not an ideal solution, but they are the best we've got at the moment. I am still waiting for somebody on this forum to draft a law which allows good / safe drivers to use their judgement on how to drive (i.e the appropriate speed) but controls the bad drivers so that no one dies due to driver error ever again.

The guy says he was doing 160 kph on a m/way with a speed limit of 130 kph - suggesting that he may face a prison sentence

What planet are you living on? - the prisons would be full within a week

That quote from Val was on 4 september and the point about only +30kph was mentioned so long ago I expect she and everybody else has long forgotten about it,  Why is this thread being resurrected eight weeks on?

Should there be a time limit on postings to "old" topics as there is on many Forums to stop old items being dug up and regurgitated over and over again?

I too received a speeding notice as the registered owner (94 on a 90 road), although a UK visitor had been driving at the time. Page 2 of the notice is the "Formulaire de Requete en Exoneration" and provides for you to state either that the vehicle had been stolen or was being driven by someone else with your permission. Filled it in and forwarded it with a copy of the drivers licence and have heard nothing since. nor as it happens has the actual driver.
