CT test

Recommended Posts

We hope to buy later this year and leave a car in France. However, before actually buying we will be making trips over.

Just a hought, rather than start the whole process having bought, would it be possible to put a UK reg vehicle with MOt etc through a CT without owning a place in France - I assume that there ar differences between the two systems and a vehicle passing one will not necessrily pass the other.

If it is possible what would the implications of a fail , in this situation, be?

Thanks

Paul

TBH, if its a UK registered car with a valid MOT, then there's no point in having a CT done until you've moved in, at which time, it becomes compulsory as you need to re-register the car over here.

Once you're living here, you can have a test done without an appointment.  It takes about 20 minutes and is basically the same as the UK MOT - your car should pass without any problem.  In fact, some minor faults do not result in a fail - you are "advised" of them so you can get them fixed.  If your car fails, you must get the repairs done and re-present the vehicle for test.  Most CT testing stations offer free retests. Once you've got your CT certificate, you can proceed with re-registering the car.

As an aside in our area the approach to national standards varies from CT station to station e.g. black sticky tape for gender bending can be an absolute no-no, a note on yr CT that lights must be fixed in 3 months or gallic shrug. And just because the sign says "no reservation needed" don't believe it !!

You will need a French address of some sort for the CT documentation.
