Irene Entwistle
Could someone please point me in the right direction with regards to driving in France, i.e. Insurance, Road Tax, MOT, Licence. Many thanks
Opalienne
You will need to have your car registered in France or buy a French one. Insurance you get from a French insurance company; there is no road tax; MOT (controle technique) is obligatory on cars over 4 years old and needs to be renewed every two years; licence - you can drive with a British one. PeterG
The best direction from Manchester is just to keep going South..................Only joking!!!!!!
Patf
You will find all you need to know on the Driving in France forum, higher up the main page. Briefly there is no road tax, MOT every twoyears, you can use your UK license, for insurance there are differencesin the systems eg car insured rather than driver, and you can transferno claims bonus up to ? 50%. Pat. ps Sorry Opalienne just realised I've repeated much of what you said.
andyh4
Ireneis this a question about driving after you move permenantly to France or are you asking about driving while you are on holiday? For permenant move see the advice from Pat. If this is just a holiday then inform your UK insurance company who may issue a green card. Take your insurance (and green card), Registration Document, MOT certificate (probably not neeeded), driving licence and passport and have them with you in tha car at all times. Unlike the UK it is an offnce not to have your diving license and other documents with you when driving.
Apero
Agree with all the above andyh4, though do we still need a green card?[*-)] Regards
Brilec
Agree with all the above andyh4, though do we still need a green card?[*-)]
No, your UK insurance must cover you for the legal minimum requirement in France. You will probably want to sort out better cover, to be the same as driving in the UK.Some UK companies, such as Churchill, give this automatically. andyh4
Some companies still seem to issue green cards, and if they do I suggest you take it with you with you insurance certificate since it is internationally recognised and recognisable. If not then the normal insurance certificate on its own will do.
Ron Avery
How can something so simple get so confusing[*-)]. If you are insured in the UK and drive on the continent you are coverd for 3rd party risks ( not fire and theft) under your UK pollicy, unless your UK policy specifically excludes it.If you have fully comprehensive insurance, or 3rd Party fire and theft, in order to retain that level of cover while outside of the UK you must notify your insurance company of this and tell them which countries you are travelling to. They will issue a green card for those countries (and bail bonds if going to Spain) It depends which company you are with if you pay for a Geren card or not and the amount of time covered. It is normally a maximum of 90 days per trip , with a maximum of 90 day per annum..
