short(ish) stay

We are going to be in France for the next academic year - so under a year. Is it possible to stay on British plates for this time, legally? Would like to avoid the situation where it takes 10 months to get registered in France (we have a non EU imported car) and then we come back again and have to reregister. We live in a university town in the UK at the moment and notice that lots of academics who go on sabbatical (either going abroad or coming here) don't change their plates during that time.

Also there is the (related) insurance question, SORN, etc. All advice gratefully received! Thanks. (Sorry if this question has been asked before.)

Hi Kali

I think you'll find your answer on this thread:

http://www.completefrance.com/cs/forums/3/683712/ShowPost.aspx#683712

There is a little 'search' box at the top of the page if you're not sure whether your question has been asked before - just type in something like 'British plates' or 'Car insurance' if this thread does not answer your queries.  Then post again if it's still not clear! [:)]

There are International agreements which provide for the temporary use of a vehicle in a foreign country for a limited time, usually 6 months in a 12 month period. A visitor to France may use a vehicle displaying foreign plates, provided that all taxes (including vehicle excise duty) are paid in their country of origin.

You must have a current valid MOT at all times.  You will also need to arrange foreign cover with your insurers for the period you expect to be in France.

You cannot declare SORN if you intend to keep using the car on the public roads.  If you are going to be visiting abroad when your tax disc is due to be renewed you may apply for a new disc up to 2 calendar months before the existing disc expires. Advance applications can be taken or posted to a selected Post Office or a DVLA local office. If you are making a postal application you must also submit a letter explaining why you are applying to license your vehicle so far in advance. If you have an address abroad you can ask for the disc to be sent to you there.

On the other hand, if you are taking up residence in France, then you will have to import the car and re-register it here.

Thank you both for your replies. Following the link I found Owen's query in May, which was the same query as mine, and I think/hope we can stay on British plates for 10 months, but will need to get new tax disk before we go (conveniently it runs out in September). And we will need to find a French insurer.

We insured with AGF through an agency run by a chap called Thierry

Marcq.  The agency staff all speak English.  You will need proof

of no-claims. We got fully comp for less than it cost us in the UK

(mind we used to live in Bromley).  Tel. for Thierry Marcq from UK is

00.33.321.111.710.  All his staff seem to speak very good English.

Email thierry.marq@agents.agf.fr.
