Le_Jars
Hi all. A week ago my engine (1.6 Renault Kangoo diesel) decided tosuddenly not drive well up hills. Along with a lack of power there is adistinct 'hissing' from the front of the car (it's like the air con iscoming on stronger as I accelerate). Does anyone have any idea whatthis might be so I can go to the garage fore-armed with some knowledge?
Chancer
Probably a hole in the vacuum pipe to the turbocharger wastegate actuator.
Le_Jars
"turbocharger wastegate actuator."....er is this for real? sorry but it sounds like something out of Thunderbirds!I don't mean to be disbelieving, but could you explain it in even moresimple terms? I know an aircooled VW engine well, but anything else isjust beyond me. Thank you.
Spongebob
Ask them to look at the pipe connecting the turbo air output to the inlet manifold.Sounds as if you could have a loose/leaky connection.Spongebob
Le_Jars
I think I've located the turbocharger part and now I need to check the pipes to and from it if possible, when it stops raining!!
Spongebob
My ZX used to do this, either the pipe split, or the clamp had been left loose after a service, glow plug change etc.Spongebob.
Le_Jars
I can't honestly see a split or hole, but it's a complete sod to getat, so maybe I just can't see it. Any other ideas before I give in andtake to the garage?
Fridgeman
HiHave you tried running the engine and then looking and listening for where the hissing is coming from?
fulcrum
If you take your car to a reputable garage they will tell you what the problem is.
Chancer
To trace vacuum leaks spray WD40 in the general direction of potential leaks while the engine is running, if the hissing stops and the engine speeds up and the exhaust turns white then you have found the leak.My money is still on the wastegate actuator control plumbing as it gets very hot and degrades, sometimes collapsing under the vaccum being delivered to the actuator causing loss of turbo pressure whilst climbing hills etc, this fault took me 2 years to find on my old Seat Alhambra, "reputable garages" were useless as they just followed the fault code that said the actuator wasn't working properly, it wasn't but it was not faulty, it was misbehaving as the result of the fault that needed a human not computer diagnosis.Your problem could equally be a leak on the pressure side of the turbo system but my money is on the above. Le_Jars
Thanks JR, I think I'm going to have to take it in and convince him I may know what the problem is. Thanks again.
