Sunday Driver
The charger on Bugbear's link is an Optimate, which is an "intelligent" device with features not normally found on simple chargers. It also has the advantage of a display system which tells you exactly what's happening to your battery. It's considered to be the top piece of kit for motorcyclists (I've got one!) so it would be well worth your while investing in one.
bejay
So far as the mower is concerned, isn't it likely that the charger that came "free" with the machine is the same thing that you describe? The instructions say that it can be left connected all the time with no risk of overcharging.
Unlikely. Smart or intelligent (!) chargers are rather more expensive than basic chargers. More likely it is a trickle charger which gives out a low current. Unfortunately this isn't a good way of charging a deeply discharged battery, it isn't just a question of time, the charging characteristics are wrong. As others say get yourself a smart charger, it will change your life. There are all sorts of makes and capacities at very varying pricesbj
