Bugsy
Interesting point but both my bike (Triumph Sprint) and car (Audi A4) are french purchases and have kilometre only speedos. With no facility to read MPH does this mean that they do not conform to UK traffic law?.
Sunday Driver
Like any European owned vehicle visiting the UK, your French registered bike and car are legal as long as you don't exceed the local speed limit - in Imperial miles per hour, of course...[:P]

AnOther
I imagine that unless committing some outrageous illegal act it's likely that your average traffic plod might well turn a blind eye to a foreign registered vehicle anyway and if actually stopped a sudden total loss of ability to speak English coupled with production of a French licence might carry the day. This might possibly not work so well if your name happened to be something like John Smith...[Www]All completely hypothetically of course [:$]

Anton Redman
The last time I looked there was a requirement to accurately record the speed but no specefication of the units. So you could have then recalibrated or a new dial printed in for instance inches per second.
Will
Having driven a French car in England, and vice versa, many, many times, it's not difficult to remember the corresponding miles or kilometres for the standard speed limits. 30mph is near enough 50kph, and 40mph is just over 60kph, 50mph and 80kph, 70mph and 110kph are pretty much the same, 60mph is a tad over 100kph and so on. I am sure the pedants will point out the inconsistencies, but unless I have made silly posting errors, any difference is within the limits of accuracy of a normal speedometer.
