When do you need to register trailers?

We have a specialist trailer which we've had imported from the states.  It's maximum load capacity is 480kg and it weighs 210kg.

Our insurance company is stating that we require a carte gris as the combined weight is over 500kg, however, we know of others who have the same trailer as us here who have been told by their insurance company's that they do not require one.

Does anyone know what the legal standpoint is and should we require a carte gris, what paperwork we'll need to pull together etc..

Thanks

Deb

Your insurers are quite correct.

As your trailer exceeds this limit, you will have to apply for a carte grise.  To do this, you will first have to submit the trailer to your local DRIRE for a single vehicle approval inspection.  You will have to provide the DRIRE with a full technical notice from the trailer manufacturer detailing the chassis/braking system and tow hitch.  If these comply with French safety standards, and you've replaced the US lights and reflectors with EU ones, then you'll receive a single vehicle type approval certificate.  To register it at your prefecture, you'll need a demande de certificat d'immatriculation, the DRIRE type approval certificate, the original purchase invoice, your passport and a utility bill.

In order to tow the trailer to the DRIRE for its inspection, you'll need to apply to your prefecture for a temporary WW carte grise and get a WW number plate made up for the trailer.  This carte grise lasts for 15 days and is renewable once.
