Three of us went into the Marie at Chef Boutonne 79 to ask abour changing our licence to a french one. I was sure we had to take photo's etc to Niort. We were told was to go to Niort and the prefectures office would just stamp our UK licence. This is certainly not what I was told 6 months ago. Has anyone changed theirs at Niort recently; and if so what did they have to take, do.

There is an arrangement whereby holders of foreign licences can 'register' them at the prefecture and I suspect that is what your mairie have suggested.  That said, not all prefectures require this and Niort certainly do not.

If you wish to apply for an exchange, then you need to supply the following:

  • application form for an exchange licence,

  • two photographs in the prescribed official format,

  • photocopy of your original UK licence,

  • proof of identity, eg passport.

Finally, I assume you are aware that your UK licences are fully valid for driving in France without the need to voluntarily exchange?
