BobDee
I have just received the renewal notice for our 20 year old French registered Mercedes. This will be for the third year and the cost is roughly the same as when we first took the policy out. In the UK I had a 12 year NCD but the French agent would only allow me 5 years on the French Insurance. This policy with limited milage (8000 Kms per year), My wife as Co driver and breakdown cover, currently costs €370. Is this reasonable or should I be looking for a new insurer next year? AnOther
Don't know about reasonable, that's for you to decide, but typical, yes, I would say so.That's roughly what I'm paying for my MGB, though it's for unlimited mileage, but I'll admit I took my eye off the ball and missed the opportunity to shop around because I know I could have got it for around €250 if not less. I may consider changing the registration from normal to collection when the new rules come in next April but I need to see what the downsides are first.Pick up one of the classic car mags and you'll find that there are several comanies specialising in cars which are past their flush of youth but not necessarily old enough to be termed 'Classics' according to the 25year soon to be 30, yardstick.THIS is one and you can get a ballpark figure on the page. For a 1988 car worth €3000 the price for fully comp is €311. My MG comes in at €297 but I know that to can be bettered.
cooperlola
I also get the impression that as cars get older, premiums do not go down as they do in the UK. Could this be because they tend to include breakdown cover which you are increasingly likely to need? S/D?
val douest
It might be worth getting a quote from MAAF even if your policy isn't due for renewal yet (see the thread on Money Saving Expat above).Val
