Roadside speeding fine without radar or evidence
I suppose I was hoping for pictures, like in the highway code.
In most bookshops you can find a paperback entitled Le Code de la Route which looks a bit like a heavier version of the UK Highway Code, and has plenty of pictures.  There may be more than one edition, e.g. the one I have is published by Michelin, and the pictures include advertisements for their tyres.   I think I paid about €12 for it.

The title is misleading; the book is not in fact the Code de la Route (which is the complete law, as quoted by Cathy) but only a summary of it, mainly intended for people preparing for the driving test.

It's certainly useful and the illustrations are good enough to be instructive even if your French is a bit shaky.  Personally I think every British driver in France should have a copy: it's worth the money if only to be sure that you understand priorité à droite.
