Bobk
I thought I would put down my experience of registering my car in France. The car is second hand, 7 months old and has done 15000 miles and was bought in UK.I took all the necessary forms and bits of paper to the tax office to get the quittus fiscal. The lady there took one look at the receipt and said I needed a receipt showing no VAT as I was a french resident. (I understand the rules are that the car must be 6 months only AND have covered 4000 miles or 6000 kms.) I explained this to her but she was not having any of it. So I went back again a couple of weeks later with a friend who is French and this time a different woman took one look and the forms and gave me a quittus fiscal form to fill in! It would seem that civil servants here make up the rules as they go along.Today I queued in the Prefecture for an hour and came out with a temporary carte gris ( they were having computer problems) having been relieved of 1047€. Wilko
Hi BobkCould you explain:(I understand the rules are that the car must be 6 months only AND have covered 4000 miles or 6000 kms.).Why do you think that she said the receipt should show No VAT ?Lastly might I ask what sort of car attracts a charge of 1047 euros.Rgds Wilko
AnOther
It would seem that civil servants here make up the rules as they go along.
Unless you have just landed in France or been exceptionally fortunate, surely you should know that this sort of behaviour is more or less standard practice [:D]Quittus form to fill in ?With the cars I have registered here the nice lady at the Impots has always filled it in for me and all I had to do was sign it.I believe all new Carte Grise's are centrally issued (Paris ?) so you no longer receive it from the Prefecture on the day.Actually, strictly speaking, I think the rule might be that you should have owned the vehicle for 6 months, not just that it be 6 months old, so maybe it's a good job that the efficient 2nd person still didn't apply all the rules properly [Www]A tapered carbon tax is levied on new and nearly new cars so I think it might be quite easy to hit €1000+ for an initial registration. I have to say though that it is unlikely in the extreme that I will ever be experiencing this 1st hand [;-)]Glad you got your registration anyway [8-|]
krusty
The Quittus form must be one of the things that vary in different departments , because ours in Limoges also hand over the book for the applicant to fill in the details.
Bobk
Wilko,1) There is a typo "the car must be 6 months only " it should read "the car must be 6 months old".2) If it were a new car exported from UK then it would be VAT free but TVA would be paid in France.3) Cars producing between 166 and 200 gm/km of carbon dioxide attract a 750€ one off payment called Eco-taxe then there is the 318€ for the Carte grise plus 4€ Taxe de gestion and 2.50€ Affranchissement. Anton Redman
Ditto just paid € 203.50 for registering a four year old Jaguar. 12,000 miles and it has two leavers to adjust the headlamps for the CT. Less than half the total costs of registering the 306 five years ago.Does the Carbon Dioxide Tax only apply to vechiles first registered anywhere after a certain date ?
