tonyinfrance
Hi - my tyres are still in good shape but prior to spending a month in Provence (as an unpaid gardner!) I thought I'd check if the French regulations are a bit stiffer than UK. Anyone know what the minimum tread requirement is?CheersTony
Clair
"the tread depth of tire must be at least equal to 1.6 mm all around. If this depth is even at one location, less than 1.6 mm, the tire is smooth and should therefore be changed.Lumps of rubber are placed in the bottom of the main grooves. When wear reaches them, it means that the depth is equal to 1.6 mm. The tire is smooth and should therefore be changed."source
pachapapa
Google on french google "pneu témoin d'usure" for plenty of info but in principle not less than 1.6mm on any portion of tyre.Check a link: http://guide.pneu.popgom.com/changer-mes-pneus/usure-des-pneus

Thebiga
If you don't have a depth guage and want to know where to look for the where indicators take a look onthe sidewall of the tyre where it meets the tread and around the tyre you will find small raised triangles if my mind serves me right and these are where the depth indicators are. AnOther
Frankly running tyres down to the legal limit is ill advised, at 1.6mm their performance, particularly in the wet, will have deteriotated seriously. I always change my tyres well before that. Not independent I agree but THIS site discusses the difference in performance between 1.6 and 3mm
