crossy67
If I were to buy a 5 year old used car from a dealer in the UK to export would I still need to pay VAT on it? If no then would I need to pay TVA when it arrives back here?
AnOther
No.
crossy67
Nice one AO, direct and to the point. Ta. How do I prove to the dealer that it is for export then?
Sunday Driver
You don't need to prove anything to the dealer. He sells you a second hand car, you pay him and drive it away. What happens after that is not his concern.
AnOther
There is of course no VAT on second hand cars anyway [;-)]
crossy67
Thanks for the info. If the dealer is vat registered the price they advertise includes VAT, I would have expected an argument if I told one I didn't want to pay VAT. I mean, who does? AnOther
Not strictly true sweets, secondhand commercial vehicles are subject to it [;-)]
Rabbie
But only if sold by a VAT registered business
crossy67
If the turnover is greater than the threshold then you do. I used to own a garage (many years ago, when I 1st started in business) and we got hit for VAT on cars we had sold over the previous year. Stupid mistake done many moons ago as youngsters[8-)]. Maybe the VAT man was pulling my trolleys down?
Anton Redman II
Broadly dealers have to account for VAT on the profit they make selling second hand cars not the full price. Attached note covers it in more detailhttps://www.alliance-leicestercommercialbank.co.uk/bizguides/full/usedcar/parkes-vat.aspBut the VAT they account for is not recoverable by a VAT registered business nor I suspect on export
Russethouse
My understanding is that second hand car sales are frequently done under what is called 'the margin scheme' As Anton says, not recoverable.
