Daft Doctor Posted October 2, 2011 Share Posted October 2, 2011 I'm looking into the concept of buying a LHD car in the UK (CofC notwithstanding of course) ahead of our move to France, as it might save quite a bit buying in the UK if the right car was available. The problem is disposing of my current vehicle other than by auction, private sale or that web-based company which has had bad press recently. All the LHD dealership websites I've looked at talk only of taking LHD cars in pt-ex, but I wonder if anyone who has bought a LHD car in the UK from a dealership was able to pt-ex their RHD vehicle? dave21478 Posted October 2, 2011 Share Posted October 2, 2011 If you are trading in a beat up old Escort, they will not want to know, but if you have a new-ish, desirable, re-sellable car I am sure they will be happy to take it off your hands. Don't be under any illusions though - you WILL get a better deal selling it privately and using your cash and no trade in to negotiate a better deal.Take care though and check prices here in France....since several LHD dealers have appeared on ebay, the prices for certain LHD cars in UK is pretty much at a par with what you can find here. I traded in an old, practically worthless RHD Xantia, and got a few hundred for it.http://www.lhdplace.co.uk/They also helped sort out French insurance - probably not the cheapest, but quick, easy and English-speaking. Daft Doctor Posted October 3, 2011 Author Share Posted October 3, 2011 Thanks everyone, I have a 6 year old BMW to get shot of, in average condition (a few minor bumps and scratches) but only 51k miles on the clock. The only real benefit in my experience from trading in has been convenience, avoiding double insurance, road tax etc, and you expect to lose out in a purely financially sense by doing so. In the past dealers have done a 2 way deal, either £x to change after pt-ex or £y without trade-in, with 14 days to do one or other, but not sure if that type of offer still happens.
