Pickles
The European Commission has adopted proposals under which all new models of cars and light vans after October 2015 will be fitted with the eCall system, which automatically calls the emergency services (via 112) in the event of an accident. If the driver is incapacitated, the system will send basic vehicle type, location and sensor details (eg airbag deployment). So basically, your car will have a mobile phone and GPS integrated into it. Now, this obviously could give rise to add-on services - apparently the default system is not active unless a crash has been sensed, but I suspect that manufacturers would want to exploit this system to provide additional systems or revenue streams. The basic system could also, I suppose, be used to provide data for tolling and insurance risk assessment purposes. Big Brother?
