Cartoonists in France

Does anyone know if it is possible to pick up work in France as a cartoonist - freelance or otherwise.

I've worked for a newsapaper for nearly 15 years now, and my OH wants to relocate to France next year.

I also do graphic work, etc, but I can't seem to find much information on it in France.

Cheers

When you talk about being a cartoonist, do you mean an editorial cartoonist or a comic book artist?  If it's the latter, "bande dessinée" Mr. Possum and I can give you advice about that, as that's part of what we do (we write them, don't draw them.)  In fact, Mr. Possum spent the weekend at a comic book convention in Paris.

Angouleme is at the end of January/ beginning of February.  It is indeed huge and takes over the whole town.  Impossible to find a decent room if you haven't booked way in advance, however.

Although there are lots of publilshers present at these things, the big handicap with festivals of this size is that the sheer number of people make them daunting for both aspiring artist and editor alike.  It can be very difficult to really make a good contact.  That being said, many of the companies will have editorial staff there to look at portfolios and you can get seen, if you are patient and willing to stand in long lines.

Hi

thanks for reply.

I'm actually both. I've worked for about 15 years as an editorial cartoonist, plus other magazine cartoon work.

I've also recently teamed up with a writer to work on a new comic idea.

My artwork is varied as I went to college to study art - life drawing, graphics, etc - but I concentrated on editorial cartoons when I left.

I was just wondering if I might be able to pick up some work in France in either area as I'm considering moving there with my OH.

Cheers
