Garyrcross
Having read some of the postings on this website, we are thinking of opening a Paint shop in the Poitou Charente area and as part of the market research for this project we would like the views of the people that could be purchasing from us.The points we need to clarify are:Location: Would the shop need to be in a large village or are people prepared to travel, and if so how far.Stock: What sorts of paints are required.Delivery: Would a same day delivery service (at a premium obviously) be useful.Opening hours: With many people working weekends would a short opening period (if allowed) on Sundays be useful. We are at present researching prices, suppliers and laws etc, regarding the above. Jean L Ecossais
Without trying to be negative there are already numerous paint shops in this area,Mr Bricolage,Castorama,Weldom, Leroy Merlin all large chains What would you be able to offer that would be different? I find that French paint is perfectly acceptable and does come in numerous colours if you go for the mixing system The only objection I have is the cost of paint in France which is about double that of the UKHow would you solve that problem? If you are limiting yourself to the english market then I think you would struggle either people bring it over from the UK or buy in France depending whether you are perminant or not. Are you intending to import paint from the UK?How much is that going to cost? You would probable have to base yourself in one of the larger towns such as Angouleme La Rochelle to have some sort of customer base Bet of luck
Teamedup
I realise that there are probably lots of brits in the west, but how on earth can you be competitive with the likes of the companies that JL'E has stated. You would have the hefty 'charges' of any french business. Your turn over would have to be phenominal.Castorama is B&Q and I'm sure that they could sell cheap paint, they don't, but they probably could. I would love to get cheap paint in France, but it would cost a lot to send it across to us here in the SE as I would never do the 11 hour drive to collect it from your shop, I could be in Dover in the same time. Goforit
Hi Gary I know this is late reply to this thread but I've only just moved over to Dept 19 in the last 2 weeks. I am interested in your idea, and may have a proposition for you, but I'm not sure how to send to your private e mail address, could you either tell me how to access it or reply with it attachedRegardsSteve
Garyrcross
My idea had never been to compete on price, but more on quality and more specialised paints than the sheds sell. Message in you inbox.
Liane
Everyone told us paint was more expensive, depends where you shop. We did a price comparison with B&Q brand and 4murs, 4murs were about the same price and I didn't have to drive to England for it (7 hour drive plus cost of petrol)! We found french paint to be watery and basically rubbish even the higher priced stuff, I think we went through all the brands and eventually got a delivery from England! Hope it works for you.Deby

Message in you inbox.[/quote]How much more specialised can paint get than what is on offer? Every colour under the sun is available; finishes for every surface and paint effects of every type. I am sorry to sound negative, but apart from paint being more expensive here there is nothing, as far as I am aware, that you can't get. If your prices are not going to be competitive then I can't see where you will score.
