Living in the UK, working in France !!

there seems to be an abundance of info on doing it the other way round (as it were) but I have a small question. A relative who lives in the UK is staying with us for a few weeks and doing some work round the house for which I was thinking (operative word) of paying him. What, legally would be the position from a cotisation etc perspective, epsecially as a neighbour has already asked if he can do some work for her while he's here.

He is happy to take my dosh but reluctant to work anywhere else due to a fear of both gendarmes and speaking french.....

My understanding is that according to the strict letter anybody who works for any sort of reward, be it for cash or a free/cheap holiday is technically being employed with all it's implications and obligations. In a worst case if somebody got seriously hurt you might find yourself

in some difficulty.

In practice of course it goes on every hour of every day so you have to exercise your own judgement.

I don't know the full circumstances but in

principal I think the idea of working for the neighbour is not good.

If you want to do it legally, then if the worker gets an E101 form, designed to give health and social security cover to those working on a temporary assignment overseas, and there is a proper contract with the relative's employer (or with him direct if self-employed), that makes it official as far as tax/NI etc is concerned.

However, if doing any sort of building work, there is the question of compulsory French insurances, which are only available to those with a registered business in France, to be considered. I suspect that might make the idea a non-starter.
