Staircases

We have just purchased a barn not far from La Soutarraine near Limoges, I have been designing the layout of the barn conversion and now require 2 sets of staircases.

Can these be brought wholesale?
If so does anyone know the costs involved?
Are they good quality and will they go the distance?

Can these be made to order by a local carpenter?
Any ideas where to start on finding someone?
Is this a specialist job to make and install?

Has anyone out there had any experience in this field, maybe your a carpenter yourself and could offer me some advice or maybe you have a carpenter working for you as we speak.

I look forward to hearing you comments and advice

Thanks

Lee

Have a look at the Lapeyre website or pop into their store in Limoges to get idea of price, quality etc. We bought our oak escalier from Bricolot in Poitiers. I think they are Lapeyre seconds (ours had a slight waterstain which will disappear) and half the price.

Most carpenters can and do make staircases. Look in www.pagesjaunes.fr and key in "menuiserie - escalier" and chose your locality.

We have just asked a carpenter based near Confolens to measure up and make our small grenier windows and alter our staircase a bit to fit. Maybe this is too far away.

Maybe a good idea to do a search of these forums as many of your questions have been asked before!!

Good luck......Tom

Not hard to do yourself if they are straight flights. I get some made but I also enjoy making them myself. To my mind, it should be the very last thing that is fitted in a barn conversion so it is often a good idea to knock up something temporary in sawn timber whilst you are doing all the messy stuff.
