zeb
We are at the stage of constructing a chimney and fireplace in our barn/sitting room to take the large woodburner. Probably get shouted down for heresy but I really don't like those redbrick and artex fireplace constructions on sale at the bricos - arghhh! Has anyone constructed their own fireplace? Can anyone recommend a book or a website for design ideas - we want something that will suit old barn but it has to be affordable. (We have the chimney construction sussed - so its just fireplace designs needed).Cheers ...........helen
Lf
Easy and cheapish is to use Siporex blocks to form the carcass and then face it with real brick facing or possibly reconstituted stone. Fit an oak lintel and oak surround in sawn green oak from a local sawmill.RegardsCharleshttp://www.lesflamands.com/hr
Bobc
Dear Helen,As Charles has rightly said, the easiest solution is to build the surround in block and then face it with reconstituted stone/bricks/briquettes.I have built a number of these for clients with either oak or stone mantels.Drop me a message to my inbox or to the e-mail address in my profile with your postal address and I will send you a brochure on the facing products that I use together with some pictures of other hearths that I have built.Kind regards,Bob Clarkehttp://perso.wanadoo.fr/grindoux
