Russethouse
From time to time there have been questions about cleaning old stained toilets, in the past I have suggested wearing rubber gloves and using a pumice stone on limey deposits but this afternoon I tried spirit of salts......excellent results. Just pour into the bowl and round the pan and leave for 6 - 8 hours then flush and brush. Its pretty lethal stuff ( DO NOT GET IT ON YOUR SKIN )and rather fumey, so please be very careful. In case you are wondering we live in a hard water area and lime-scale makes the toilet look dirty. BJSLIV
And as we are talking about Hydrochloric Acid DO NOT mix with bleach, unless you want to recreate some WW1 mustard gas.
Val_2
We had to use Spirit of Salts every year when we lived in Bucks, the really hard water made a terrible state of our loo. My husband used to do it and looked like one of these nuclear decontaminators with respirator and thick industrial rubber gloves, although he actually used a rag and stick to apply the stuff and then made sure it was disposed of very carefully. It is not easy to buy the stuff nowadays like it was from what I hear.
Diana
GayDo you think this would work on an old coloured ceramic shower tray, if we are to put a plug over the drain hole and fill with water. And what would it do to the grout arround the tiles.ThanksDiana
