cookehouse
We have an oak floor (parquet) which looks untreated but is in great condition. Anyone know the traditional way of treating and maintaining it?
Poolguy
CookehouseDepends on what you mean by Traditional - whose tradition.I think in the past French have used everything from Shellac to bee's wax to animal fat.If you want to get the most beautiful finish which using natural products and non toxic - use Tung oil.If you need more information, see my ad under 'house renovations' or send me a PM,email and I'll show you some recent examples. Please don't consider lacquer or vanishes whether solvent or water based. They ALL use accelerators which are class 1 carcinogens. these must be avoided at all costs.Andrew
Paul Bradford
Hi, We have solid oak flooring sourced in France throughout the hall, lounge and dining room. We have used Rustin's Danish Oil for treating it. It gives a clear waterproof finish that can be finished with wax polish, although that is not necessary. It would need to be treated every couple of years depending upon the traffic in that area. When cleaning off the floor prior to applying any finish, be careful not to get any water on the bare oak. If this is allowed to soak in it will leave an unsightly black mark. Regards Paul
