kazdan
I am an English builder who is about to purchase land in France. I intend to build the house myself and am wanting to know if there are any requirements or restrictions on this ,eg., do I need to be registered as a builder in France, even though the property is for me to live in when it is completed? I have had a lot of difficulty getting any information about this so it would be great to hear from anyone in a similar position or with a similar experience. Anton Redman
Suggest you buy Construire ou Renover sa Maison" - Published by Editions Denoel - ISBN 2-207-2562-0. Available from the book section of the Hypermarkets and on line from Amazon.FR. It is full of illustrations and a good start point. Page 18 has a list of the people who can be involved in house construction. Downsides of not going down the some form of approval / check on the work route are that the house will be difficult to sell within 10 years of construction. My reading some time ago of the full Permis de Construire forms was that an individual did not need to be registered as a builder to construct a house for their own use.Page 60 has a list of the ‘Regles generales de construction’ and references to most of the relevant ‘Normes Francais and legislation.'Faire Construire sa Maison' is a monthly French Magazine which also had adverts for books on the subject and over about six issues gives a basic guide to the process in France. It is more heavily aimed at 'Turnkey' houses from builders than equivalent UK mag but is worth getting. One thing you will need is insurance which is compulsory in France.Whereabouts will you be building in France ? kazdan
Thank you Anton for the info and book lead. The land is near Ruffec Charente and we are still in theprocess of acquiring the plot. I have read a few books about buying property in France, but nonegive a thorough insight into the whole process. If a book like "Housebuilders Bible" by Mark Brinkleywas available for the french market it would make things seem a lot less daunting! Thanks again.Kazdan. Anton Redman
The book I suggested plus the House Builders Bible gets you a long way down the line. I found the HBB one of the most down to earth reads on the subject. Real self build is a lot more common in France than UK.
