finding a good builder?

My wife and I have purchased a plot of land between Bordeaux and Bergerac. We have detailed planning permission for a house but don't know anyone in the area that can recommend a good builder to take the project from foundations to completion. Are their any ways of locating local firms, also ways of checking there credentials? All suggestions and recommendations greatfully received.

my partner is a builder and we are actually moving to teh house we purchased just outside Cahors. may be something of interest to him.

First try asking at the Mairie in your village. There may be someone local. Another idea is to drive round looking for newbuild going on, usually on the outskirts of a town. Speak to the builder working there and have a look at his work at the same time. Pat.

As per PatF says, have a look locally.  But do be aware that builders doing up houses may not have the insurance cover to do new builds; the two are vastly different!
