Tieman
We've just signed and returned a devis for about €2,700 worth of work with a trustworthy (or at least as far as we know!) local painter, together with the requested cheque for approx. 20%.Was he just chancing his arm (with non resident Brits)? even though we will be seeing him days after the work is due to be finished or is it now generally required by the trades in France?ThanksDavid (85)
Dick Smith
That's normal, in my experience. The first tranche covers materials etc.
VJ
And in my case the complete opposite. All the trades I have used either billed me at the end of the job for everything or stage payment which I signed off. I offered to pay a percentage up front as I thought this was fair but they all said no.perhaps it was my honest face !!!!!!
Alcazar
Same as VJ, all the work I've had done was paid for afterwards, with one large job having staged payment. I've never heard of up-front payments even in the UK.Alcazar
andyh4
I think it probably depends on the size of the job and the amount of materials that have to be purchased in advance. We certainly made an up front payment to each of the main trades for a barn conversion, but not for the tiler, where we had purchased the tiles.
