Liz
How about the Gardening Forum, scroll down the screen a bit [:)]. Can't help much with the South West but it would be helpful if you could say what you want to plant - lawn, veg, shrubs or hard landscaping etc requirements may be different for each of these. In general a garden can be prepared anytime when the soil is fit to deal with ie not too wet or frosted.Liz

zeb
Hi Blade - had to laugh as some kind soul bought us Alan Titchmarsh's Gardening Year for Xmas! AT says for January, sit back relax and plan garden then order seeds , then goes on to give 8 pages of tasks which should be carried out in the garden in January - where is the time for relaxing!Anyway, the best thing to do if the weather is good and the garden is not too soggy or frozen is mark out and dig the vegetable patch, cover it with heavyduty black polythene sheeting and wait for March!! You could also do the autumn tidy up of perienniels if this hasn't already been done. Take off all the dead bits or cut them back to the ground, Fork over flower beds and burn anything that's dead. Build compost bin (we used pallets to build two).Chit some potatoes in egg boxes in a warm, dry place Cut back roses by a third so they don't blow over (proper prune in Spring).Plan irrigation and buy large waterbutts to collect water - every summer we have a drought here (and water restrictions) and the well has dried up twice (Charente). Watering is a chore in July and August!Keep off the grass at this time of year.Buy Rustica weekly - you will soon learn French gardening terms and it gives weekly planting diary.Sit back, relax and plan garden!Don't know where you are but in Northern France gardening times are much the same as S. Britain, southern France up to three/four weeks ahead.
