Land drainage

Hi everyone

We have a problem with water running off the field next door ( not ours ) which is up the slope from us. This flows into the garden and is stopped by the house, where it soaks into the wall. We would like to cut a trench across the garden and put in some yellow drainage pipe. Has anyone done this and could tell us the proper method to ensure long term success. ? Depth of trench, type of backfill etc.
