Attaching exrerior staircase to wall

The exterior walls of our fairly modern house are breeze block covered

in crepi. We are placing a wooden exterior staircase against one wall,

descending from the balcony. Which is best - to bolt it direct to the

wall or to insert another piece of wood between the staircase and wall?

Fix a small joist to the wall with Rawlbolts, or similar, if poss notch in staircase to joist.
