Termites ? In Normandy (50)

Is there a termite problem in this area or is it elsewhere in France ?

Unlikely, that far north.

There are plenty of other wood-chomping creatures to worry about, should you be so inclined!

I live in La Somme and like Nick think that they are not prevalant here, the house had to be inspected for amiente and plomb but not termites.

This week I recieved a phone call, now my french leaves a lot to be desired but I can always tell from the tempo (possibly not right word as I am losing my english!) if it is a sales call or they are reading from a script.

The lady said she represented an oficial sounding body who wanted to inspect my house for termites, gratuit of course but that it should/must? be done every one or two years.

I said "non merci" my neighbours thought that it was a scam when I told them.

Not exactly a scam, just a "cold" call. If you had accepted their offer, they would have given you your free inspection, which, you could bet your last dollar, would find an infestation of something - the remedial work for which would cost about twice the going rate.

Termite reports are compulsorary (along with lead & asbestos) for some/most/all parts of France, when selling houses - not, regardless of what the PP was told, every 2 years.

Yes we had the Lead and asbestos survey results, both present in very very minor quantities but I pondered about termites and thought it best to ask.  Merci.

When we considered selling our apartment(which is mainly concrete)we were told a termite survey was needed,just to confirm that it is mainly concrete.
