Dormers

Has anyone out there fitted dormers to their roofs??

We have a farmhouse which has a low dormer in one upstairs room but would like to increase the height say to about 5ft internally and add two matching ones further along on the same side of the roof. I don't have any shortage of stone (got tons of it) but just wondered if anyone had done this and is it a sort of suck it and see excercise?

The roof itself will need re-tiling in the next couple of years but I would like to get the dormers done first.

Also I need to add a window into an end wall and noticed that on existing widows they only tend to use a partial lintel as opposed to a full width lintel.....why??

I've helped put two dormers (lucarnes) into a freind's roof and I've

recenlty put two windows into exterior walls in our other house. What

do you need to know?

Partial lintel? I've never seen one.

We have had three put in our roof but I must say, I just watched the guys do it!  They are timber and tile hung - no stone involved.  As le Jars said, what exactly do you need to know?

You will need permission first and depending on your location too as dormers arenot usually allowed near churches and other monuments historiques in the centre of villages and towns.A Déclaration de Travaux should suffice along with plans,photos and cadastral details etc.
