briwy
We have bought a small chalet in the Pyrenees last year and are slowly doing odd jobs and decorating as time allows when we are there. One of the main things we want to alter is the finish on some of the walls. The whole interior is covered in what I assume is Crepi, a bit like Artex, and its a bit too much on every wall.Is it possible to plaster over this or recrepi it with a smooth finish as opposed to the rough finish we have now?Any ideas much appeciated,Brian
Cassis
Unless you want a totally smooth finish, a smooth crépi will do what you want. We did it in a passageway. Try a test patch first.
briwy
Thanks Cassis.I assume I can just use a float to apply it over the top of the existing crepi.Im not bothered about it being totally smooth, just not rough and knobbly like it is now.Are there different kinds of crepi or is it all the same?Brian
Cassis
Crépi can be applied either by trowel or by a roller. What you need to dodepends on what you mean by "rough" regarding the existing surface - ifit has distinct high and low points as if it was trowelled on in thefirst place, then you probably need to trowel it again, which is a painand uses a lot of crépi to get back to a flattish surface. But if your"rough" surface is basically smooth but jagged/spiky to touch, one ofthe smooth crépis with a roller should re-cover it in one.

Misty1
Hi If you want a smooth finish try Polycell 'Smooth Over' we used it at home and its very good but a bit expensive.Good luck its a messy job!
Suze01
We have (had) a couple of rooms in the house with a crepi finish. One was very sharply stippled and for that one we took it back with a 'grater' to leave a rippled surface. But in our bedroom we very succesfully removed the crepi with a steamer and scraper, underneath was a completely smooth surface that didn't even need any plastering and has been painted over with a very good finish.
