cooperlola
Le Mans!Edit : Not a very comprehensive response on reflection. Seriously, 55 minutes by TGV into Montparnasse station. Lovely countryside (rolling hills, forests etc), house prices still quite reasonable. Climate - not too hot, not too cold - on average about 5 degrees above the South of England - although you wouldn't know it at the moment. Nice lively city with not too many social problems and lots to do. A very attractive old town with protected buildings and a beautiful cathedral. New tramway due to open in November linking the station to the suburbs. Close to the Loire Valley. Oh, and there's the petrolhead thing but it only intrudes (if it's not an interest of yours) for a couple of weeks a year.
Tourangelle
Tours (but TGV), Senlis (but it's expensive) Amiens.
Framboise
Again, TGV from Montparnasse, 1 hours 20 mins. Disembark any of the stations in the Orne, L'Aigle onwards. Beautiful!
Pierre ZFP
Reims? On the new TGV Est. Could be a bit pricy on a daily commute though.
Lassie
Fontainebleau. 35 mins to Paris. Beautiful forests, chic shopping, pretty villages around, good markets, large expat community if needed (INSEAD), international school. We have lived in 3 different parts of France and like this best.
