dragonrouge
We had the UK granite worktops for many years and they came from kitchen suppliers and we were shown the sheet form of the granite we were to have installed. On Friday we had some so-called granite worktops installed and due to spillages today we now have circles on the granite caused by olive oil and red wine and it will not come out. Please forgive my ignorance but is granite porous or have we been duped with marble? If it is granite then I presume it should have been sealed? If so what does one normally seal the surfaces with please and equally how do you get the circles removed. The supplier who also doubles as a funeral undertaker did not tell us anything about sealing the tops.No problems in over 20 years in the UK with granite. Please can someone help for I really do not know anything whatsoever about what is going on. cassis
From here:http://www.craftsmanltd.co.uk/granite_care.php
Spilt liquids should be mopped up immediately. The most risk is fromhighly alkaline or acidic liquids (such as lemon juice or vinegar), oilbased substances (such as butter and cooking oils - hot oil splatteringfrom cooking pans around the cooker), wine, detergents and alcohol.

For a longer lasting finish the surface can be sealed to reduce itsnatural porosity. Surface treatments should be reapplied every 4 monthsafter cleaning with a neutral detergent.
Cat
Is it a light coloured granite? When I bought mine I was told by the supplier that the lighter granites are more porous than dark ones, and so more likely to stain.Even so, you would hope that a brand new worktop would have been well sealed. sheldonrobbo
granite is not as resilient as most people think in its natural form ...and most uk worktop suppliers provide a sealed form....presumably your french "undertaker" supplied the grade as used by monumental masons (unsealed)....it is as cassis said prone to staining by various liquids particularly oils ......i doubt very much at this stage that you will get the stains out...but would suggest you contact your undertaker and check whether he recommends a suitable sealer.....before you get any more stains good luck sheldon
