thehydes
Have just received a letter from the waterboard to say I need to fit a non-return valve to my side of the water meter. Is this a standard non-return valve and how long have I got?Cheers for any reply
hoverfrog
you what?we have no such thing - and have never had a requirement for one.Have you added anything recently that might affect liability (like a swimming pool)?
jondeau
A non return valve is required in the UK on any mains pipe that is liable to be contaminated by hot water from your plumbing system. As you are aware......when you heat water it expands and on a typical French system it expands back down the water main, It has always amazed me that the French didn't insist on a non return valve years ago.........the next requirement to come along will be an expansion vessel on the chauffe eau. BIG MAC
Imagine a water trough full of mosquito larvae and cow slobbers at the top of a garden....a garden hose left in it quietly back syphoning into the mains.........Non return valves are handy things
Chancer
It would need to be a long and steep garden with the trough more than 100ft above the rising main in my case [:)]Oh and if it were possible you would never have been able to fill the trough from the hose in the first place! BIG MAC
And of course you never switch the supply off or have a pressure drop as the mains are worked upon, presumably there is no chance of anyone in your house flushing the toilet at the same time as the washing machine is on etc etc........so you should be absolutely fine and should not under any circumstances install non return valves. However for the rest of human kind its maybe a good idea........Non return valves on domestic shower mixers have been mandatory in the uk since 1999 due to potential back syphonage from the humble domestic shower.......rarely 100ft up in the air. Check Water supply (Water Fittings) Regs if at all interested in the reasons..........The post was intended as a light hearted demonstration as to the why.........Amen
