Offer the asking price

I've heard this also and I think you're right.

As soon as we had agreed to buy our house we (both vendor and us that is) signed a sort of "letter of intent" which our Immo produced and then, a few days later, signed the Compromis.

Sounds like you've sold privately but when you sell through an Immo I think you also sign something when you put it on the market commiting to sell if offered the asking price.

I would guess that you are free to sell to the first person who is prepared to sign something, why wouldn't they if they're serious, if they need to raise money they can always put a Clause Suspensive in the compromis, but I'm sure others with more experience than I will be able to further confirm this, or otherwise [blink]

[quote user="Ian"]I  have read that if someone offers me the asking price for my house I am obliged to sell it to them - how long have the "offerers" got to sign the compromis de vente before I can sell it to someone else?

You are and a Notaire can/will force the sale through. However, the offer is not accepted until the purchaser signs the CdV. As Ernie sez; you are at liberty to accept another offer before then. However, of course, if the original purchaser then signs the CdV, before the 2nd, then the first offer has precedence....

It is all soooo complicated..

Not sold yet Pads, but things ticking along quite well...

My own website is generating around about 20 leads (and thus far 10 viewings) for every one lead from all other media (6 paid for ads online and 3 estate agents) combined...that said all it takes is one person to buy.

The chest of drawers / sink units are in both of the bathrooms - we love them too.  We bought them with the house ... and will leave them for the new owners of course.  I guess you'll just need to hang around at vide greniers and hope you strike lucky....or buy my place [;-)]
